For more than a century, Gardens House was home to the directors of the Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Built in 1854, the hidden gem enclosed by Melbourne’s most spectacularly located private garden played an important role in the history and development of the Melbourne Gardens.
Corporate retreats, private parties, glittering functions and high-end weddings have enjoyed the magical seclusion of Gardens House. Now a highly sought-after venue available for private functions and events, the tender of this long-held contract offered a unique opportunity to reframe access to and expand the use of Gardens House and its glorious surrounds.
A sensitive refurbishment and increased profile will introduce more visitors to the history and botanical heritage of this important cultural asset, contributing significantly to the wider vision of the Royal Botanic Gardens Board.
A procurement strategy developed in close consultation with the Royal Botanic Gardens Board looked to further develop the appeal of Gardens House as a destination event venue. The tender set out a strategic approach to diversifying its market appeal and invited a sensitive refurbishment to embrace the historic and cultural significance of Gardens House.
Attracting a strong market response and creative submissions, the tender resulted in the appointment of a multi-award-winning catering and restaurant group to partner with the Royal Botanic Gardens Board in managing Gardens House.
Effective scoping, management and informed contract negotiations provide the framework for sensitive management to support the preservation of the property and gardens for future generations, while expanding programming to include outdoor theatre and drawcard events.
