Client: Melbourne Theatre Company
A tailored hospitality approach at MTC’s Southbank Theatre delivers an activated venue and supports a thriving Arts precinct
Melbourne Theatre Company’s purpose built Southbank Theatre opened late 2009, following an extensive planning process. As the principal home of the Melbourne Theatre Company, the building’s design and functionality was tailored to allow MTC to present a variety of performance styles. Constructed simultaneously with the Melbourne Recital Centre, the planning process involved design coordination. The Company’s administrative headquarters, including workshops, rehearsal and administrative spaces, were planned and relocated at the same time.
The Theatre’s impactful design reflects the creative and innovative programming of Melbourne’s oldest established theatre company. It includes the 560-seat Sumner Theatre, 150-seat Lawler Studio, as well as box office, and foyer bars, function space and Script Bar and Bistro.
With involvement from conceptual planning, Maytrix worked closely with Melbourne Theatre Company and the consultant team to achieve an activated and engaging foyer, effective foyer bar and dining to maximise operating options, service and efficiency.
Ground up planning included the planning and design of all service and support areas, planning and management for the procurement of an operator and overseeing the opening of the foyer bars and venues to ensure a successful transition into an activated theatre and precinct.
The development of the Southbank Theatre has significantly contributed to creating a thriving Arts precinct and supported an activated venue and full time box office operations.
