Te Papa, the national museum and art gallery of New Zealand, appointed a new manager for retail and function catering and delivered a significant increase in commercial return following a successful procurement process informed by a peer review framework and analysis of catering.


The Project

Te Papa is one of New Zealand’s most significant museums and a top tourist destinations, and its retail and function experiences are
an important part of the visitor experience.

Catering operations for the museum were managed by an in-house catering team when it first opened in 1988, but following a peer review of its business plan, the Board committed to outsourcing food and beverage operations, including its after hours destination
dining.

The Board recognised that Te Papa’s catering operations were an important part of its brand as a premier destination for local, national and international tourists, and that catering needed to provide a commercial return to the Museum.

Our Role

Following a peer review and feasibility and options analysis of catering services, The Maytrix Group developed contract specifications and participated in the evaluation of catering tenders for the appointment of a catering operator. Due to the importance of catering as part of Te Papa’s visitor experience, The Maytrix Group engaged with a large stakeholder group representing interests across the Museum management team to inform the development of the tender and evaluation framework.

At the conclusion of the process, a well credentialed operator was appointed to manage both retail and function catering at the Museum. The Museum is currently achieving a strong commercial return through its retail and function operations, which helps to support its core activities and enhance the visitor experience.
